Beyond the Portfolio : 10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photography and Videography Team

You’ve found a photographer whose images you love. You’ve watched a wedding film that made you tear up. But before you book, there’s something else worth understanding: what working with that team will actually feel like.

We recently had a consultation with a couple who came prepared with thoughtful questions about everything from posing and audio to family photos and file backups. We loved that conversation because these are the details that help you make a confident decision.

Here are ten questions worth bringing to your own consultation…and a look at how we approach them at UnityREEL.

1. What is included, and what is an add-on?

Wedding photography and videography packages can include very different things. Start with the basics: coverage hours, team members, and final deliverables.

For video, ask what kind of film you’ll receive. A highlight film brings together selected moments to tell the story of your day. A full ceremony edit lets you revisit the ceremony from beginning to end. A documentary edit includes longer sequences, such as your ceremony, speeches, and special dances.

At UnityREEL, options such as teaser reels, documentary edits, individual event edits, and video guest messages let you build on your coverage.

Ask: “Can you walk us through exactly what we receive—and which extras we might want?”

2. Can we customize our coverage?

Your wedding timeline should help determine your coverage hours.

Think about what you want documented: getting ready, a first look, the ceremony, family portraits, toasts, dancing, or your exit. Then talk through how those moments fit into the day.

At UnityREEL, we can customize coverage hours and add-ons. Photography and videography coverage can also have different lengths if that better fits your priorities.

Ask: “Based on our timeline, how many hours would you suggest for photo and video?”

3. How do you capture our vows and speeches?

Beautiful visuals are only part of a wedding film. Hearing your partner’s voice, a parent’s toast, or the laughter during your ceremony can bring you right back to that moment.

At UnityREEL, audio is an intentional part of our video coverage. We use multiple recording sources for key moments, including microphones and recording equipment connected to the sound board or DJ’s system when available.

Ask: “How do you record audio, and what backup sources do you use?”

4. Do we need a second photographer/videographer?

A second photographer and/or videographer can help when important moments happen in different places at the same time—for example, when you’re getting ready separately.

It’s also useful to understand the difference between multiple cameras and multiple people. One photo/videographer can operate a setup with more than one camera for key events. An additional photo/videographer brings another person who can capture a different location or perspective.

Our packages include one photo/videographer, with the option to add a second by the hour.

Ask: “Where would a second photo/videographer make the biggest difference for our day?”

5. What if we feel awkward in front of the camera?

You don’t need modeling experience to have beautiful wedding portraits.

You do deserve to know how your photographer will guide you. Will they explain where to stand? Help with your hands? Give you movement prompts? Let you know when something looks great?

Misty’s background in portrait photography informs how she approaches posing at UnityREEL. We give clear direction, keep communicating, and adjust as we see what feels comfortable for you.

Ask: “How do you help couples who have never had professional photos taken?”

6. How do you handle challenging light or spaces?

A sunny ceremony, a dim reception, or a small getting-ready room each calls for a different approach.

At UnityREEL, we consider the available light, where we position you, our camera angles, and when additional lighting will help. Flash can help balance light on a subject with a brighter background. In darker spaces, added lighting can help us capture the people and atmosphere.

The approach also depends on the moment. Portraits allow more control than a ceremony already in progress.

Ask: “Can we see examples of weddings with lighting or spaces similar to ours?”

7. Can we share inspiration and mix photography styles?

Absolutely. Inspiration helps us understand what catches your eye.

You might love natural color throughout your gallery, with a few dramatic portraits. You might care most about candid interactions, meaningful details, or a particular location at your venue.

Send images or reels and tell us what you love about them: the light, the mood, the composition, or the connection between the people. We can use that understanding to plan. Specific recreations depend on your location, light, timing, and the day itself.

Ask: “How can we communicate the look and moments that matter most to us?”

8. How should we prepare for family photos?

A little preparation makes family portraits easier for everyone.

Create a list of the groupings you want and identify someone who knows the family members and can help gather them. If relatives speak different languages, arrange for a trusted person who can help communicate.

We can demonstrate poses and give visual guidance, while your family point person helps with names and translations.

Ask: “What should we prepare so family photos run smoothly?”

9. What happens if equipment fails—or you can’t attend?

This is a reasonable question to ask any wedding team.

At UnityREEL, our photography process includes dual-card capture, backup camera equipment, and backups after the wedding. We also have a creative network of second and associate shooters to draw on if emergency coverage becomes necessary.

Discuss who will cover your wedding and how contingency arrangements work before booking.

Ask: “What are your backup plans for equipment, files, and team availability?”

10. When will we receive everything, and how long can we access it?

Knowing the delivery timeline helps you understand what happens after the wedding.

At UnityREEL, the timelines discussed in our consultation were:

  • A photo sneak peek within one week.

  • A full photo gallery in approximately 10–14 weeks.

  • A highlight film in approximately 3–4 months.

  • A documentary edit in approximately four months.

Edited photo galleries are available through Pixieset for at least one year. We also discussed a one-year availability window for purchasing RAW video footage.

Once your finished files arrive, download them and keep your own backups so you can enjoy them beyond the online delivery period.

Ask: “What are our delivery timelines, download options, and access deadlines?”

Bring your questions. We want to hear them.

Your consultation is a chance to understand the people who will be beside you for some of your wedding’s most meaningful moments.

Tell us what you’re excited about, what feels uncertain, and what you want to remember. You don’t need to know photography terminology or have every detail figured out.

At UnityREEL, we’re happy to talk through your timeline, explain your options, and help you find coverage that fits your day.
